| LT Richard G. Courtney, M.D. A a native of Tampa, Florida, Dr. Courtney spent much of his youth exploring the Keys and surrounding coastal waters, free diving and SCUBA diving since childhood. Dr. Courtney is currently the Undersea Medical Officer (UMO) for the US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group ONE and Mobile Unit THREE in San Diego, California. As part of his current responsibilities he serves as Pacific Fleet and EOD Diving Operations Inspector, and Diving Mishap Investigator. He serves concurrently as the Force Medical Officer for Operation Northern Edge, a multi-service and multinational cold weather exercise conducted each winter in Alaska. Prior to this position he served as the Training Medical Officer at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida, where he also lectured on Diving Medicine and Dangerous Marine Life for the Florida State University Scientist in the Sea Program. Dr. Courtney received his BS in Biology from University of South Florida, and his MD from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. His post-graduate medical education includes an Internship in General Surgery, and extended post-internship training in Neurological Surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He is a graduate of the Naval Undersea Medical Institute's Undersea Medical Officer School, and of the Diving Medical Officer School at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center. Dr. Courtney has also received training at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in high altitude, cold weather and wilderness medicine. He is a Navy Deep Sea Diver with certifications in SCUBA, Surface Supplied Hard Hat Diving, and MK 16 Closed-Circuit Mixed Gas UBA. As part of his current duties, he is also qualified as a Naval Airborne Parachutist. When he is not working alongside US Navy divers, he can be found at home aboard his sloop "Windwalker" plying the waters somewhere off the California coast. |
