Thor Dunmire Born October 21, 1966 in Miami, Florida. My father was a commercial spear fisherman in the Florida Keys when I was young, so I began diving at age three and spear fishing at age Seven. This early start led to my constant need to be in the water and my obsession with fish. When I am not diving and watching fish I spend a lot of time painting pictures of fish, thinking about fish, or eating fish. When I sleep I usually dream about fish. I also have been accused of being a little fanatical about exercise. I earned a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1989 from the University of Florida. I was much more interested in the ocean and in diving than in lab work so I joined the U. S. Navy and became a Navy Salvage Diver. After getting out of the Navy, I went to graduate school at the University of Miami and studied neurotoxins produced by red tides. I next worked for the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI) for thee years, doing fisheries and marine ecology research in the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park. It was while working for FMRI that I first learned about the National Undersea Research Center and the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory. The uniqueness of the habitat and the research supported by the program convinced me to leave FMRI and take a staff position with Aquarius in April 1999. I have been a habitat technician for several missions but still get excited about each chance I get to be an inside habitat technician, and the opportunity to spend more time living with the fishes. |
