Dr. Carayannopoulos is currently serving as the Medical Officer for Submarine
Squadron Two-Two, a fast-attack nuclear submarine squadron forward deployed
on board the USS Emory S. Land in La Maddalena, Italy. In that position,
he serves as the Department Head of Submarine and Diving Medicine as well
as Radiation Health. He is also a Navy Diver and member of the USS Emory
S. Land Dive Repair Locker.
Alexios is a native of Boston. He earned a B.A. degree in English Literature
and Biochemistry from Connecticut College in1992, a M.P.H. in Epidemiology
and Health Policy & Management from the Johns Hopkins University in
1995, and a D.O. from Nova Southeastern University in 1999 through a NAVY
Health Professions medical scholarship. He completed a transitional internship
at the National Naval Medical Center in 2000. Subsequently, he attended
the Naval Undersea Medical Institute and Naval Dive Salvage and Training
Center where he earned his qualifications as Undersea and Diving Medical
Officer. He became qualified in submarines in 2001. He is a certified
PADI Open Water Dive Instructor as well as a IANTD Nitrox diver.
Dr. Carayannopoulos will be attending Harvard Medical School in 2003 to
specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His research interests
include the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to stroke, traumatic
brain injury, and spinal cord medicine.
