Journal 16 - James Talacek: Day 5: Friday, June 14, 2002

It's 10:00 pm on day 5 of our mission. I now remember the one bad thing about being down here...time flies by way too fast! Is there a better job than this anywhere in the world? I think not, but then again I am a bit biased.

Here's a typical "day in the life" of a habitat technician:
Wake up sleepy head! Next it's time to get that daily checklist of life support systems completed. After that we (Mark & myself ) ensure the scientists are prepared for their morning dives and we get them out the "door". Once that's completed we get to take turns diving. Our dives as habitat technicians are comprised mainly of routine maintenance of Aquarius.

Too cool! Our "office" setting has many guests that regularly stop by: jewfish, barracuda, snook, hogfish, moray eels, stingrays and our resident nurse shark. Just to name a few.

After diving we await the arrival of the rest of the Aquarius staff. Life down here seems simple, but only because we are "looked after" by 10 + other crew members. We all take turns as habitat technicians, so next month it will be me who is bringing out supplies to the next pair of technicians. That duty is also fun, but living underwater for ten days is by far my favorite part of the job.

Stepping into the moon pool to head out to work is a treat that relatively few people will ever get to experience. It seems so natural to our crew, but from an outsider's perspective it must seem surreal.

The scientists for this mission are too much fun. Bill and Ove are from Australia and their "down under" wit keeps me laughing. Josh and Sarah are from the states and enjoy most of the music I play when I'm inside.
Emails from family and friends remind me of my terrestrial roots, although when living down here I think of myself as one of the "locals". I do look forward to seeing friends and family again, but I will be disappointed when the time comes to return to the surface.

Like I said, "time flies by way too fast", regardless of where you are. So make the best of life and go diving (scuba and /or sky) every chance you get!!!
