Journal 4- Sarah Lee: Day 2: Tuesday, June 11, 2002
There is the most curious sound in here, which sounds just like rain dripping off of gutters and onto the pavement. Which is, of course, impossible, we are submerged forty odd feet underwater, and the habitat has no gutters. Maybe it is the magnified sound of snapping shrimp (unlikely) or the sound of water in pressurized seals (alarming).
It is the first day of our mission, things are new, and I'm preoccupied with details. For example, we can tell that there is surge on the surface because our ears feel as though we are bobbing up and down underwater. Rather there is a rhythmic kind of pressure on our eardrums, that makes me want to yawn or swallow constantly. It does not seem to keep me from sleeping (I have already taken a nap) or eating (which I do continuously) which is reassuring.

This afternoon we started to set up the vertical migration and larval release timing experiments. We already captured several larvae!!! The lights outside are attracting zooplankton, they swarm and hover outside the windows like mosquitos. Pretty soon fish should come by to feed on them.

I look forward to tomorrow.
