Journal 20- Danny Olivas: Mission Day 4: Thursday, July 18, 2002

Our two dives today were a bit different than we had planned. The construction task, originally scheduled for four dives, was finished in less than two. CNN is supposedly doing a story on this expedition and we took a couple of video clips specific for the program. We had to disassemble the construction project, move it, change its shape then mount a camera on it. Originally, it was supposed to be together for the Educational Outreach events, but we didn't have enough time to do all the disassembly, video, and reassembly. When we cut to the outside camera during the event, Greg and Jonathan were erecting the structure. But this time it was in a different location than the camera was originally pointed. We originally built it and positioned the camera for the event. However, with the move by the first team and reconstruction by the second team, we didn't effectively communicate the proper location after we took the video clips (perfect example of how things can get balled up without thinking about all the details). Anyway, as the we got into the webcast, Jeff and I were talking about how good communications skills are crucial to mission success and blah, blah, blah... then we realize that the outside camera facing the structure with Greg and Jonathan busily working was being built in the wrong place! Oh well, maybe nobody noticed with the murky conditions.

For the second dive we got the word to press ahead with the communications testing... without Houston. What a bummer. It sure would have been cool to talk all the way back to Houston from here. Anyway, we pressed ahead with communications tests between the aquanauts and Aquarius. The testing went well and I think we collected good numbers.

We've been working pretty hard and the diving is exhausting. I've been sleeping really hard and eating at least three square meals (probably many more) per day. The days are rushed but I take time to look out the viewports when I'm in the Hab, and all around, when I'm on my dives.

I've seen significantly more than I ever expected or even dreamed. I wish my dad was down here with me. I can't count how many times, as I child, me and my Dad sat up on Sunday nights to watch underwater documentaries. I hope that my recollections, photos and video of all the amazing things down here can suffice to convey how truly beautiful and fascinating it is here. As I look out the portside viewport at schools of sardine dashing back and forth with yellow tail snapper in hot pursuit, I appreciate what a privilege it is to be here (and not a sardine out there). I know my time here is growing short but I plan on taking in all that this place wants to show me. What a truly humbling place.
