Lindholm: Mission Day 1: Monday, August 19, 2002 Today began my third Aquarius Mission over the past year (second as a saturation diver). Each mission has developed along distinctly different lines, and I expect this one will do the same. But before holding forth on the day's events, I am compelled to refer back to nearly a year ago. My first saturation mission began at 8:30am on September 11th ...fifteen minutes before the planes hit the World Trade Center. For the first ten days of that horrendous period, my fellow aquanauts and I were isolated from the world, with the notable exception of our daily interaction with the personnel who operate Aquarius. They were our extended family for that critical period. So it was with genuine enthusiasm that I returned to Aquarius this time around, to work once again with this excellent crew. That said, the mission is underway and on track. Over the weekend, in preparation for the mission, we caught and tagged a black grouper and two mangrove snappers. Today, my dive buddy, Sarah Fangman, and I surgically implanted acoustic tags in four princess parrotfish. Together with the yellow tail snapper tagged by our surface team today, we are well on our way to meeting our goal within each of the three functional groups we are seeking to tag (see the mission summary for more detail of the experimental design). There was some excitement at the end of the day with our air supply, but all told, the day was a success. Tomorrow we will once again rise with sun and head out on to the reef for another day's tagging. Stay tuned... |
