Journal 16a-Rick Gomez: Mission Day 6: Saturday, August 24, 2002

Today started out fine with our first dive being uneventful. We worked the northeast area which is about 65 ft. deep and full of gorgonians and octocorals. Mike's stations are on a ridge line that drops off to about 95 ft. and seems to attract all sorts of pelagic life. We saw a large school of horse eye jack and some more spotted eagle rays swimming over the area. The swim has not been as bad as we first suspected and we haven't had any trouble getting our work done. Thor and Russ have also helped out by allowing us to stay at "storage depth" (the same depth the habitat is pressurized to) on our swim out which saves our bottom time for the surveys at deeper sites.

Our second and third dives were fine except that the visibility is still not very good. We had some visitors today - PI Steve Smith and UM postdoc Guillermo Diaz stopped by to see how things were. We let them know about some of the little problems we were having, such as the computer not working due to the pressure in the habitat compressing the keys on the keyboard rendering them useless. We also let them know we were running out of data sheets so they sent down Bo and Ashley, two UM research divers, with extras. Habitat life has been great and everyone is doing well.
