Journal 17-Sarah Fangman: Mission Day 7: Sunday, August 25, 2002

I've had friends and family email me and tell me they've checked out the Aquarius web cams and can see us working! What they don't see is the team of people that are working topside to keep this mission running smoothly. Twenty-four hours a day, for the entire ten-day mission, the topside support team is standing by, ready to address any issues that may arise in Aquarius. Unfortunately for them, sometimes they occur in the middle of the night! At three a.m this morning, we received a call from the watchdesk, telling us that the CO2 levels in the habitat were creeping up and that we needed to make an adjustment to our ventilation system. It is very reassuring to know that folks are paying careful attention to your well-being, even when you are sleeping!

On the surface above the habitat, there is a large bouy which has our power generator and air compressor. This morning when we awoke, the compressor had decided to take a break. Within moments, the surface team was in a boat and on their way out here to attend to the compressor. Fortunately, today the seas were calm. Working on machinery and electronics in a small, hot space in a bouncing bouy can be a bummer in rough seas! Not a job I could do - given my tendancy towards seasickness! Needless to say we were grateful for their efforts, for within an hour, the compressor was back online and we were in business!

Also a part of the surface support team is a U.S. Navy physician, Dr. Illy Dominitz. She has been on call 24-hours a day since we saturated last Monday. She has made several trips out to the habitat to check on all of our health. Illy's been keeping us healthy so that we don't miss any work time. Thankfully, our ailments thusfar have been minor. Cuts and rashes and the like. Because we are constantly wet (diving 6-8 hours/day), your skin gets soft and cuts easily. And down here, cuts don't heal and can become infected.

Our thanks go to the excellent support staff at the surface! They have attended to our every need - be it technical or physical. And yesterday they even delivered Sushi!!! Wow.
