Gomez: Mission Day 1: Monday, August 19, 2002 The last couple of days have been interesting. First getting used to the habitat, and second seeing some fish species for the first time. Mike and I worked "the Ridge" area where we set up four sampling stations. The site is close to the habitat so we could get used to everything going on, without long travel times. This site also works well for James because it allows him to move to work areas so both dive groups can be in the water at the same time (policy for the habitat is for dive teams to be relatively close to one another in case of emergencies, so dive teams are not allowed to work at opposite sides of the area). Our fish counts went well and, we both saw fish we hadn't seen before. This was somewhat of a surprise to me having done a considerable amount of diving (1000+ dives) in the area. I attribute the sitings to being able to stay u/w for much longer than normal at these depths. The fish that I really couldn't believe we saw, and actually called Mike over to see, was a Blackfin Snapper, usually a deep water fish but we saw him at 70 feet. ***On a side note I just had to notify the "hab tech" that I took a vitamin. Such is life in the habitat.*** The rest of the day was great. Mike and I had some extra bottom time at the end of the day (we didn't sample in the morning because of the habitat emergency briefing) and got a chance to watch the fish near the habitat. That was very cool. Regarding the food (after one day), the cuisine here is definitely different than what most normal people eat. All of our meals have been freeze dried stuff, which is not in my normal diet and after this mission will certainly never be. |
