Journal 3-Rick Gomez: Mission Day 2: Tuesday, August 20, 2002

As I write this log entry there is a great lightning storm going on topside and the flashes are visible down here. Occasionally, the lightning will flash and light up the fish just outside the main viewport.

Today went pretty well with us sampling the "Pinnacle," which is the second of the three areas we are sampling. It's the area at the far southern edge of the site. It's about 900 feet away and takes about 7 minutes to traverse along the navigation line, from Aquarius out to the site. This will be a difficult swim if the current ever picks up. We saw another fish we hadn't seen before, a "Shy Hamlet."

Life in the habitat has been great because we have a good crew. The habitat techs, Russ and Thor, have been great helping us with everything and keeping us on schedule. James and Sarah are a lot of fun to hang out with but, we already knew this from the training week. I can see how this place could get "small" real fast if you didn't get along with someone in here. Some Girl Scouts came down for a visit today. They were given the royal tour (about 30 minutes) and seemed excited about the whole thing. We all thought they were really lucky to have had the opportunity.

I'm still not a fan of the food. Fortunately, there is enough junk food around to keep me from shriveling up and floating away.
