Lindholm: Mission Day 2: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 As I suggested in yesterday's log, each mission develops its own rhythm. Had someone told me last week that I would catch four princess parrotfish in a trap, and four hogfish in a mesh bag, I would have not been inclined to believe them. And yet, as you may have guessed, that is exactly what has happened. After two days of work, we have tagged 31 fish (both from the surface and from the bottom). In the world of acoustic telemetry, that is a respectable number. With eight days yet to go, I am feeling guardedly optimistic about our progress.Even more interesting than tagging fish, was a visit from the Girl Scouts. That's right, we had a visit today from 5 girl scouts from around the country. The winners of an essay contest are spending a week down here in the keys diving and looking around. Most of us down here have spent years waiting to get a chance to come down to the Habitat. These girls, still in their teens, have now done what most of the marine science community will never get a chance to do. And they brought cookies on their visit as well! While we don't expect visitors tomorrow, we have high expectations for yet another interesting day tomorrow. Cheers. |
