Fangman: Mission Day 2: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 Day two began slowly for me as I stayed up late the night before watching fish and squid from the bunk room viewport. Lying under the blanket with my head on the pillow, I could see hundreds of fish swarming around the habitat lights. This, of course, attracts barracuda, which used the opportunity to enjoy a midnight snack. Who can sleep through that??? Small silver fish swarming all around, and then - FLASH! in comes a barracuda for a strike! The squid were more timid, moving slowly toward the lights and dashing out to the cover of darkness. Seems wise to me, given the lightning quick barracudas Tagging today was successful thanks to Thor (one of the Aquarius technicians). We were not having much luck with our traps. As he worked to remove growth from the habitat, fish were swarming around him trying to catch a snack. Fortunately some of the fish that were attracted to his activity were those we wanted to tag. He was able to grab several with only his hands and a mesh bag! Each time we finished tagging one of his fish, hed bring us another. The three-hour dive was done before we knew it! |
