Journal 1 - Jessica Meir: Day 1: Monday, September 23, 2002
We have been here in Aquarius for just a few hours now . . . the fact that we have seen the habitat from the outside a number of times now coupled with our lengthy mission delay made it difficult to comprehend that we were actually going to stay down this time. After rinsing and stowing our gear, first of all came the habitat briefing from the hab techs, filling us in on the safety/emergency equipment and procedures and basics on living in the habitat. We unpacked the few personal items that we brought down with us and prepared for our first media event.

I am extremely excited to start the mission, especially after such a wait! I remember reading journal entries from previous missions commenting on the snapping shrimp, which sounds like rain falling on the habitat. The pressure changes in our ears are also very noticeable, perhaps because of the larger than normal waves brought on by the outskirts of Hurricane Isidore . . . . funny how you can feel such small effects of the sea state. The most exciting part thus far is the incredible view out of the portholes . . . like being on the other side of an aquarium.

We look forward to tomorrow's Waterlab construction to test our assembly skills and Coral Science to collect some useful data on the size and health of the surrounding corals.
