Scott Kelly: Day 4: Thursday, September 26, 2002
Our fourth day in saturation started off well with a morning dive. The conditions were ideal, with little to no current and great visibility. We saw a lot of sea life, including a very large sea turtle eating a sponge and a six foot nurse shark. After the dive we started preparations for our decompression which starts at 1600 hours today. During the decompression process the habitat is sealed off from the outside and the pressure is slowly exhausted over a 16 1/2 hour period, purging the dissolved nitrogen in our blood. Once sea level pressure is reached, the pressure is increased back to the ambient depth of the habitat, the hatch is opened and we swim to the surface. This decompression process will complete our mission. |
