Rex Walheim: Day 5: Friday, September 27, 2002
Today was our last day in the habitat. We got to work right away when we woke up, packing and giving the habitat a thorough cleaning. At about 8:30 a.m., the technicians brought the chamber back down to bottom pressure. We said goodbye to our favorite parrot fish, "Choppers", who hangs out by one of the starboard windows, and it was time to go. We opened up the habitat and got on our masks and fins and started a slow swim to the surface using a small air bottle. The visibilty today was by far the best of any of the days we were here. It made the ascent up the line to the boat quite spectacular. You could see for about 80 feet and look all around the habitat. Breaking the surface was equally spectacular. When you are underwater, colors are muted, so it was quite beautiful back on the surface to see the colorful sky, clouds and water. We took the fast boat, the Manta, back to base. It was a great ride and a fun way to end an awesome adventure. |
