Journal 14-Scott Kelly: Day 5: Friday, September 27, 2002
I'm sad to say that this is our last day aboard the Aquarius. In fact, I write this from topside having returned several hours ago. The day started fairly early, with packing our gear and cleaning of the habitat. Over night the Hab Techs slowly decreased the pressure within the habitat to surface pressure. When we were ready to depart, the habitat was, "blown down," in other words the pressure was increased back to the pressure at depth, the hatch was opened and we swam to the surface.

It was certainly a sentimental swim. It was a beautifully clear morning and as we slowly made our way up the ascent line we looked back at the habitat. It was a different perspective then we had seen the previous five days, from above, and with the great visibility made for an incredible sight. There were thousands of fish swimming in the water between the habitat and the surface in the morning sunlight. I was sad knowing that as I cleared the surface I would most likely never have the chance to visit Aquarius again.

This was a great experience and is certainly one of the highlights of my career working at NASA. I was blessed with a great crew of 5, 3 from NASA and the 2 Habitat Technicians. I couldn't have asked for a better group of people in which to spend 5 days in this extreme environment, I only wish it could have been longer. The folks at NOAA and NURC are a bunch of consummate professionals and I thank them for making our mission such a success.
