Journal 8-Rex Walheim: Day 4: Thursday, September 26, 2002
Today was decompression day, but we had the opportunity to go out for one more dive this morning. We were able to stay out for about 1.5 hours and still make it back by our 10:00 hard deadline. The dive was our favorite one of the mission. We were able to take our time and really have a look around. There were plenty of fish and coral to see, and we even saw a nurse shark.

The decompression process is going well. We started out by breathing oxygen for an hour while the hab technicians slowly started bringing the air pressure in the habitat back to sea level. This allows us to de-saturate the excess nitrogen out of our bodies. Right now, at 10:15 PM we are at the equivalent pressure of 18.5 feet of water. After we get to sea level pressure tomorrow morning, we will quickly blow back down to bottom level, exit the habitat, and swim to the surface with a supplementary SCUBA cylinder.

Tonight we have been watching the movie "The Abyss". It is a sci-fi thriller about an undersea habitat. We have the monitor perched up in front of the bunkroom window. Pretty neat to see a fish swim by every once in a while. Fortunately, the stay in our habitat has been much less eventful than the one in "The Abyss".
