Journal 13 - Janet Nestlerode: Mission Day 7: Sunday, November 17, 2002
I have to admit, I was as cold tonight during our dive at the base of Aquarius as I've been when diving in Chesapeake Bay in the winter! Mark and I went out to the chambers just as it was getting dark. We injected brine shrimp eggs (also known as 'Sea Monkeys' and available through mail-order from the back of comic books) into the chambers and filmed the particles flowing over the corals. We could see how the shape of the coral head affected the flow of the water around it&.it will be interesting to see how that matches up with the bleaching pattern we've been documenting during this mission! It only took us about an hour to film all 6 chambers. As we finished our dive, my teeth were chattering and my toes were numb. The visibility outside of Aquarius seems to be improving a little. We can now see the camera outside of the mess table porthole (about 10 feet away from the porthole). There were so many suspended particles in the water column this afternoon we couldn't see it thought the window! It looked like a blizzard outside! Jim says that the wind above us is shifting around to the north and visibility should improve tomorrow.
