Journal 8a - Jim Buckley: Mission Day 4: Thursday, November 14, 2002

At 0130 this morning we lost power on the Life Support Buoy (LSB) due to a fuel problem with one of our 40 KW generators. This happens every once in awhile and it's no big deal, that is until it's you inside the Aquarius and are without main AC power. Emergency DC power from the battery pods comes right on-line if main power is lost, so you're never without communications, lights, or life support. You do lose the air conditioning and that white noise that lulls you to sleep, and so you wake up when you don't hear it any longer, even before the watch desk calls to discuss the outage. The topside support team were right on top of it, jumping in the fast response boat, despite the pitch black night and forecasted 6-9' seas. After transiting the half hour voyage to the LSB, they started the second generator and had the buoy back up and running and the Aquarius back on-line within the hour. Thanks guys we appreciate it. Yes, Dr. Patterson too, even if he did sleep through it all!
