Journal 9 - Byron Croker: Mission Day 5: Friday, November 15, 2002
It is halfway morning here at our home away from home. With a cool south west current and an increase in suspended particulates the climate down here mimics that of a foggy fall day in the northeast, where you just want to lay around in bed all day. Except here the newness of aquanaut life and dedication to the science keeps a spring in the steps of the scientists working out on the reef.

For me, being down here so often between missions and living down here three times previously, life in Aquarius has become familiar. The rain drop sounds of the snapping shrimp above, the rodent-like Spanish Hogfish looking for a quick bite to eat, and the other fish who come to say hello are all present and accounted for. Every mission inevitably brings a new experience and a chance to get to know new people. All of the science crew are giddy and seem to be experiencing a little bit of narcosis. But in all actuality they may just be like this naturally.

With this being the last mission of the year I look forward to a nice holiday break with loved ones and the gearing up of winter maintenance. As with all marine related equipment the Aquarius needs lots of tender loving care. It must seem to the outside world that we live a cherished life here at NURC, but there is plenty that goes on behind the scenes to make things run smoothly. It is definitely not all fun and games. Just the same, the safe and productive operation of the habitat is something we all take great pride in.
