M. Lew Nuckols, Ph.D., PE

Professor Nuckols earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Duke University. He has taught in the Ocean Engineering Program at the U.S. Naval Academy since 1984 and served as the Chairman of the Naval Systems Engineering Department and the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering. In addition to his role as an educator, he has over 30 years of research experience in underwater life support systems and remotely operated vehicles. He has authored over 100 publications dealing with underwater technology, including two books and holds 11 patents related to diving life support systems. He has served as a consultant on underwater life support for the Office of Naval Research, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Naval Sea Systems Command, the U. S. Federal Trade Commission, and served as an expert witness in legal cases dealing with diving accidents. He has received several awards for both teaching and research, including the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, the 2000 ASNE Thorwald A. Solberg Research Award, the 2000 Raouf Teaching Award, and the MTS Academic Excellence Award. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Florida.
