Journal 2 - Todd Barsby: Day 2: Tuesday, November 11, 2003

Had a great, full day today; took advantage of being down here when our topside support was kept onshore by some nasty weather. Down here all was calm, with a few pleasant surges keeping us mixed up. If we had a schedule, I would like to think that we are on top of things or, even better, ahead of things. Given that our resident PI, Mark Hay fell asleep at lunch today, I would say that things are going fairly smoothly - I wonder if that is a safe assumption.

We finished our day's work with 3-hour night dive. It's pretty cool seeing the nocturnal creatures come out from hiding and unravel for the evening. I had to carefully untangle a basket star that was busy weaving itself into the tool bag that I had earlier placed aside. From the reef, you wave your light over the sandy ravines and catch lobsters sneaking out for the night; always shocked when caught on the move.

I had the fortune of "buddying" with Aquanaut Alex Chequer today, who, besides liking to read electronics manuals and technical diving textbooks in his spare time, is also the only one of us who knows how to operate the underwater camera (could there be a connection?). That means that I am sure I will be gracing the pages of many diving websites with all the technical diving bugaboos that we got up to and he captured.

Tomorrows another big day, so I should sign off now and let one of the other Aquanauts get some thoughts down. It's peaceful in our underwater Winnebago, at night the popcorn sounds of the snapping shrimp make me think its raining outside …. Mmmm … shrimp …. Popcorn ….. Popcorn shrimp!
