Joe was born and raised in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He attended Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square and graduated in 1983. He enlisted in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician one month after graduation.
Joe attended Basic Training and Basic Electronics & Electricity School in San Diego, CA. Follow–on education included Electronics Warfare “A” School in Pensacola, FL, Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Electronics Technician “C” School in Groton, CT.
Joe’s first tour of duty was onboard the USS Lapon (SSN–661) home ported in Norfolk, VA. While stationed on the Lapon he completed a seven–month around–the–world deployment in 1985, and earned his Submarine Warfare qualification.
Joe’s next duty station was the USS Oklahoma City (SSN–723), also in Norfolk. He became a “plankowner” as part of the commissioning crew in 1988, and made a six–month Mediterranean deployment in 1990.
Joe served in various Navy projects from 1990 until his retirement in 2003. Utilizing his Ocean Engineering background, he earned a Two–Year Certificate in Marine Electronics and a BS in Electronics Engineering Technology.
Joe joined the National Undersea Research Center as a Marine Specialist in July 2003. He subsequently earned his Open Water and Enriched Air Nitrox Diver certifications. His responsibilities include operation, maintenance and repair of all electrical and electronic systems for the habitat, life support buoy, research vessels and base facilities.
Joe and his wife Carole currently reside in Key Largo. They have been married since 1986 and have three children; Steven, 17, Liberty, 15, and Christopher, 13. Family hobbies have included camping and off–roading in the deserts of California, boating and fishing in the waters of Washington, and attending sporting events when the Phillies, Eagles or Flyers come to town.
