My name is Marc Reagan, and I am a Group Lead for the Electrical Power System and Thermal Control System instructors for the International Space Station (ISS) at NASA Johnson Space Center. I am also an ISS “Capcom”, the flight control position that talks with the crewmembers aboard the ISS from the Mission Control Center. I have served in that capacity from the end of Increment 5 to the present, logging about 300 hrs to date. I have been extensively involved in negotiations and development of training with the Russian Space Agency in support of the ISS, as well as the Japanese and European Space Agencies. I am fairly proficient in the Russian language as well.
The other primary part of my job is the Deputy Project Manager for the NASA Undersea Research Team NEEMO (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations). I trained as a backup for the first NEEMO mission in October 2001, and got to live aboard Aquarius for nine days as one of the aquanauts for the NEEMO 2 mission, which occurred in May 2002. I supported the NEEMO 3, 4 and 5 missions as part of the Surface Support Team, and was the mission lead for NEEMO 4.
I have a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1989. I received an M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering Sciences on a NASA Fellowship at the University of Colorado in 1993.
I grew up in Hobbs, New Mexico, and have long been fascinated with the exploration of the sea and space. I remember seeing one of the early moonwalks when I was just a child on TV, and knew that I wanted to be part of that someday. I am a certified PADI diver with Enriched Air, Advanced, and Rescue Diver certifications. I am also an instrument rated pilot with complex, tailwheel and aerobatic endorsements. My hobbies include soccer, water and snow skiing, scuba diving, and music. I play the keyboard and sing in a Rock 'n Roll band made up of colleagues I work with called (what else?) the “Rockit Scientists”. I reside in Houston, Texas with my 7–year old son, Kyle.
I probably have the best job in the world. I get to travel frequently, am surrounded daily with interesting, talented, and dedicated people, and come home each day knowing I’ve contributed to making the world a better place through my part in supporting NASA’s work in space, and NOAA’s work in the seas. Probably some of you reading this will have the opportunity to choose a career that will allow you to have an opportunity like this yourself. If so, I encourage you to keep focused on those dreams. Someone will still be doing these things when you grow up — and there's no reason it can’t be you!
