Lieutenant Joe O’Sullivan
Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU)

Lieutenant O’Sullivan was born in Cork, Ireland. He attended the University College Cork, Ireland and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He moved to the United States in May 1994, and went to Navy Boot Camp in July 1994. After completion of Boot Camp and Apprentice Training in Aviation, he was assigned to USS WASP (LHD–1) as an airman on the flight deck. He made deployments to the North Atlantic (1995) and to the Mediterranean (1995-1996) and was assigned TAD to UCT–ONE in Little Creek, VA while awaiting Builder “A” School. He graduated as Honor Graduate from “A” School in August 1996. In September 1996 he reported to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SEVEN home ported in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was assigned to Charlie Company Air Detachment, deploying to Okinawa and Thailand, and later to Detail Mayport during a Puerto Rico deployment. He left the Active Duty Navy in July 1999 to work as a Construction Engineer with Hubbard Construction, a highway contractor in Florida. During this time, he was also a drilling reservist with Reserve Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FOURTEEN, Detail ZERO THREE ONE FOUR (Orlando).

Lieutenant O’Sullivan returned to active duty to be a Naval Civil Engineer Corps Officer and was commissioned an Ensign in April 2000 after attending Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. He attended Civil Engineer Corps Officer School in Port Hueneme, California, graduating with distinction in July 2000. In August 2000, he reported aboard U.S. Navy Public Works Center, Guam, to work as an Assistant Production Officer and Client Liaison. During this tour, he applied for and was accepted to the Navy Ocean Facilities Program. He attended Graduate School in University of California at Berkeley (July 2002–December 2003), where he completed a Master’s Degree in Ocean Engineering. Next, he reported to Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC), Panama City, Florida, to attend Navy Dive School. He graduated as a Basic Diving Officer in May 2004.

Lieutenant O’Sullivan is currently stationed at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) as the Engineering Department Head/Facilities Officer, which includes responsibility for the Ocean Simulation Facility (OSF) and NEDU’s building facilities. He regularly participates as an experimental diver in various studies and protocols. In February 2005, he attended Saturation Diver training at NDSTC and is participating in his first open water saturation dive at NOAA’s Aquarius during the March 2006 mission.

Lieutenant O’Sullivan is a certified Engineer–in–Training, and is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). He is designated as a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist (Enlisted), an Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, and an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist. His awards include the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (two awards), and other service awards.

Lieutenant O’Sullivan is married to the former Roberta Therese Kane of Atlantic Beach, Florida. They have one son, Connor Liam, who will be 4 years old in May 2006.
