Chief Warrant Officer Spence has served as the Command Diving Officer and the Fleet Projects Officer at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) since June 2005. His primary responsibility is the safe conduct of all diving operations within the command and is responsible for all operational and administrative duties associated with the command diving program. He recently completed the Saturation Diver Course at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC).
CWO Spence received his commission in October of 2000. He served at Consolidated Divers Unit as the Executive Officer and USS Emory S. Land as the Division Officer for R-6 (Dive Locker). He has been a Navy Diver since 1983 and progressed though the diving ranks achieving Master Diver. He served on two salvage ships, the USS Grapple and USS Opportune, Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, SIMA Norfolk, NDSTC, Coastal Systems Station, and commissioned the USS Monongahela.
Before joining the Navy Jeff was a diver/student on a work program at Florida Ocean Sciences Institute (FOSI). It was there that he was mentored by Bob Kulback and learned SCUBA diving. He knew he wanted to be a diver from a very young age and when his family relocated from Cleveland Ohio to Pompano Beach Florida, he was able to make his dreams come true.
Jeff has three wonderful daughters: Christina, currently attending the University of California at Santa Cruz pursuing her BS in Marine Biology. Serena is an honor role student in her junior year at Arnold High School in Panama City Beach. Nina is also an honor role student and an awesome surfer. She is in the sixth grade at Surfside Middle School.
