Daniel Sedej is Chief of the Systems Training Branch at NASA Johnson Space Center. He manages the groups that provide training on the space station electrical, thermal, and environmental control systems while also supporting project NEEMO. This career was a childhood dream as Dan grew up in Granite City, Illinois. He was fascinated with space exploration and airplanes for as long as he can remember. In High School he took flying lessons which he afforded by working on a classmate’s farm during the summers and on weekends. He graduated from Parks College of St. Louis University in three years with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering. When Dan started at NASA in 1978, he trained Space Shuttle astronauts on Guidance Navigation & Control and then developed the training program to teach them how to fly the shuttle to rendezvous and dock with satellites. He did this training for a few years then started working on the Space Station Program where he continued to develop his management skills working in the Mission Operations Directorate Space Station Integration Office, then as Group Lead of the flight control Motion Control Systems group and later the training Avionics group.
As NASA gears up to travel back to the moon and beyond, Dan is fired up for the challenges and opportunities that exploration will bring. Project NEEMO allows him not only to train astronauts but also to visit them during their mission—something he only dreamed of while doing Space Station and Space Shuttle training.
In his free time Dan enjoys time with his family, running, reading and riding his sportsbike. He met his wife at NASA and has two children.
