Ned Irvine is a graphic designer and graphic artist. His current practice assists educational and cultural clients with their printed communications. Before returning to teaching full time, Irvine worked in publishing design for clients such as McGraw-Hill and Global Finance Magazine. He also worked in software development for clients including the National Geographic Society and corporate communications for clients such as Red Hat, Quintiles Transnational Corp., Central Carolina Bank, Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens, as well as exhibition and multimedia projects for the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Since coming to Wilmington, Irvine has worked with UNCW faculty by designing the journal Studies in American Naturalism and a book cover for colleague Dr. Amy Kirschke. His recent interest in artist books led to a fellowship with the Penland School of Crafts to study letterpress printing and the development of a new artist bookmaking course. It has also led to book publishing projects with the Cameron Art Museum.

Irvine is interested in the history of design and how it can be used to understand culture, and how graphic design re-invents itself. Collaboration is at the heart of his love of design: working in the intersections between art and graphic design. This is where he finds the most interesting clients and areas of study and inspiration.
