UNCW DISCOVER OUTDOOR CENTER TO HOST ADVANCED WILDERNESS FIRSTAID CERTIFICATION COURSE

WILMINGTON, NC- The UNCW Discover Outdoor Center will host an advanced wilderness firstaid certification course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 9-12, in the university's Trask Coliseum, Room 119. Stonehearth Outdoor Learning Opportunities (SOLO), a nationally- recognized trainer of outdoor educators, park rangers, recreation leaders, camp counselors, and instructors of programs such as Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School based in New Hampshire, will teach the class.

Using mock scenarios, participants will receive training to handle emergency situations such as neck and spine trauma, hypothermia, and heat exhaustion. There will also be a written exam to reinforce practical skills. The course can serve as re-certification for Wilderness First Response, which is a two-year certification recognized by the American Campus Association and the United States Coast Guard.

Participants must attend the entire course to receive certification. Prepare to be outside and bring things such as rain gear, boots, water, hats, gloves, camping seat, and lunch. The cost for the program is $175 for UNCW students, staff, and faculty with valid ID. Community members may also participate for $200 per person. Register in person at the UNCW Discover Outdoor Center in the Warwick Center by March 3.
