NATION'S TOP NURSE TO HELP UNCW NURSING SCHOOL GRADUATES CELEBRATE

Monday, May 01, 2000

WILMINGTON, NC -- Dr. Beverly Malone, senior adviser to the Surgeon General of the United States, will speak as part of the UNC Wilmington School of Nursing graduation celebration at 6 p.m., Friday, May 12, in Kenan Auditorium.

Malone, deputy assistant secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, serves as senior adviser to Dr. David Satcher, assistant secretary for health. Prior to her appointment in December 1999, Malone was serving a second two-year term as president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the nation's leading professional organization representing 2.6 million registered nurses. She was also dean, interim vice chancellor of academic affairs and professor at North Carolina A&T State University.

The School of Nursing graduation celebration will include the presentation of student awards and a pinning ceremony for students who will receive their degrees at the university's formal commencement, Saturday, May 13. This is a special ceremony because the pin is designed by each school of nursing to denote its graduates. Customarily, the pin is based upon the philosophy of the nursing school as well as the entire university.

The UNCW School of Nursing celebration coincides with National Nurses Week May 6-12. During the week, the nursing school will host the Nurses Night Celebration Reception and Banquet at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, in the Warwick Center Ballroom. The event will honor registered nurses from the ANA District 22, which includes Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. "Nurses Keeping the Care in Health Care" is this year's theme for National Nurses Week.

Note: The public and the media are welcome to attend and cover both events
