Monday, May 01, 2000

WILMINGTON, NC -- Over the next 10 years, some 50,000 new students are expected to flood the state's universities. Physical plants at many schools are run-down. Others are operating with outdated laboratories or are packed and cannot accommodate increased numbers without additional facilities.

A Building Crisis, a documentary produced by UNC-TV that reviews these conditions on campuses in the UNC system, will air on UNC Public Television on the following dates:

Wednesday, May 3, at 8 p.m.

Friday, May 5, at 10 p.m.

Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m.

Sunday, May 21, at 6 p.m.

Thursday, June 1, at 9 p.m.

Tuesday, June 27, at 10 p.m.

UNC-TV broadcasts locally on Time Warner Cable Channel 6.

This one-hour documentary is the most comprehensive report to date on the university system's facility needs. A UNC-TV crew visited all 16 campuses where they toured buildings and interviewed university officials. At UNC Wilmington, the crew toured an overcrowded King Hall, which houses the Watson School of Education. UNCW Chancellor James R. Leutze and the late Dr. Jay Robinson, former chair of the State Board of Education and member of the UNCW Board of Trustees, discussed the necessity of a larger facility for the Watson School of Education.
