UNCW ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS 12 SCHOLARSHIPS

WILMINGTON, N.C. ­ The UNCW Alumni Association awarded 12 scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year. Each scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $1,500.

The following graduate students are recipients:

Kathleen M. VanKeuren of Wilmington. She received the Lewis/Wiley Endowed Fellowship. VanKeuren is pursuing a master of education degree in middle grades science. She is married to Forrest VanKeuren.

Nicole Wright Dalton of Wilmington. She received the Daniel P. Lockamy Alumni Scholarship. Dalton is pursuing a master of science degree in instructional technology with the goal of becoming an instructional designer for business and/or educational systems. The daughter of Ingrid Wright of Wilmington, she is a financial services manager with Centura Bank. She received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from UNCW in 1997 and is a member of Pi Lamda Theta, the international education honor society.

Undergraduates receiving scholarships are:

Jackie L. Roberts of Shawboro. She was awarded the Gerald H. Shinn Alumni Scholarship, which includes an additional $500 book award. The daughter of Elaine Roberts of Shawboro, Roberts is a sophomore majoring in accounting.

Martin Camacho of Wilmington. He is a junior majoring in nursing.

Anna L. Cartrette of Castle Hayne. The daughter of Teri and Glenn Cartrette of Castle Hayne, she is an incoming freshman who plans to major in English.

Sharon I. Duff of Holly Ridge. The daughter of Lynne and Carl Duff of Holly Ridge, she is an incoming freshman who plans to major in elementary education. A graduate of Dixon High School, she was vice president of the Beta Club, treasurer of the Varsity Club, a peer mediator, member of the board of education's Safe Schools Plan. She received the 2000 All-Conference Award in volleyball and is a teaching fellow at UNCW.

Anna Bardowell of Greenville, Mich. She is an incoming freshman who plans to major in business administration.

Jennifer M. Booher of Jacksonville. She is incoming freshman who plans to major in elementary education. She is the daughter of Lucy Barrack Booher of Jacksonville and Carl Booher of Butlerville, Ind. In high school she was secretary of the National Honor Society, member of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society and was selected for Who's Who among American High School Students.



The alumni association also awarded athletic scholarships to:

Kelly Bailey of Greensboro. She is a sophomore business management major and is on the UNCW golf team.

Erin A. Freas of Falls Church, Va. She is a sophomore history major and is on the UNCW soccer team.

Students whose scholarships were renewed are:

Brandy L. Garrell of Chadbourne, a sophomore.

Cynthia F. Thomas of Charlotte, a sophomore.

The alumni association scholarships are given annually to students based on their academic achievements (a minimum 3.0 grade point average is required), financial need and community involvement. They are renewable if the students continue to meet the criteria.
