AUTHOR KOZOL TO SPEAK AT UNCW

WILMINGTON--Jonathan Kozol, author of Death at an Early Age, will speak at UNCW's Leadership Lecture Series 2000. His lecture is titled "Ordinary Resurrections." The event will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Kenan Auditorium and is free and open to the public.Kozol's selection as a speaker was based on his works and how they the related to the theme of this year's Leadership Lecture Series: Building Character By Design. He also came highly recommended to the UNCW community.
Kozol wrote Death after being fired for reading a Langston Hughes poem to a group of African-American fourth-grade students in 1967--the middle of the civil rights movement. The book dealt with the plight of urban schools in America.
The recipient of several awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award and the Conscience in Media Award, Kozol has addressed subjects such as illiteracy, homelessness, and educational inequality among other things. Some of his other works include: Illiterate America, Amazing Grace, Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, and Ordinary Resurrections.
