HARVARD PROFESSOR CORNEL WEST TO DISCUSS RACE AND DEMOCRACY AT UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC -- Dr. Cornel West, professor of African-American studies and philosophy of religion at Harvard University, will present "Race and Democracy" at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, in UNCW's Kenan Auditorium. The lecture is free; however, tickets are required for admission. Tickets are available at the Kenan Auditorium box office and the University Union information desk. The lecture is part of the Building Character by Design Lecture Series 2000 sponsored by the UNCW Leadership Center.West has written numerous articles and 15 books including The American Evasion of Philosophy, Jews and Blacks, The Future of Race and Restoring Hope. West's latest publication, The Cornel West Reader, traces the development of his academic, intellectual and activist career. West was recently promoted to university professor, a title held by only 14 of Harvard's 2,200 faculty. He was one of the first black scholars appointed to this position, the university's highest faculty post.
West graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1973 after three years of study. He earned a master's and Ph.D. from Princeton University.
