STAND-UP COMEDIAN AND ACTOR D.L. HUGHLEY COMES TO UNCW

WILMINGTON -- D.L. Hughley, well known comedian and actor, will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, in UNCW's Kenan Auditorium. Hughley is one of the most recognizable and popular stand-up comedians today. His appearance is sponsored by the Association of Campus Entertainment (ACE).Hughley, who is from Charlotte, N.C., is in the third season of his sitcom The Hughleys. The family comedy, created by Hughley, is based on real-life experiences. The premise of the show involves Hughley who moves his family from the city to the suburbs and from an apartment to a large house. The show deals with the sitcom family's struggle to fit into this new environment. In its first season, The Hughleys was ABC's highest rated new show and garnered a nomination for a People's Choice Award in the category of "Favorite New Television Comedy Series." Also, Hughley was nominated as "Favorite Male Performer in a New Television Series."
Hughley's career as a comic began in small clubs. Chosen as the first host of Comic View on Black Entertainment Television, Hughley said, "A lot of us black comedians wouldn't have had the opportunity if it weren't for this show." Hughley has made numerous appearances on national talk shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, and Politically Incorrect and HBO'S Def Comedy Jam.
In 1999, Hughley appeared with fellow comedians Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac on the Crown Royal Kings of Comedy Tour, the highest grossing comedy tour in history. The tour sold out major arenas and grossed over $37 million. Filmmaker Spike Lee exposed the success of the tour through his direction of a docu-film for MTV Films, which was released Aug.18.
Tickets to the event are $10 for UNCW students with a valid ID, $12 for faculty/staff, $18 for the public, and $25 on the day of the show and are available at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office and the University Union Information Desk.
