WILMINGTON, NC – Norman Bemelmans, former music director at WHQR, was named interim director of UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium effective Feb. 5.

“We are delighted to have Mr. Bemelmans join Kenan Auditorium,” said Dr. Jo Ann Seiple, dean of the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences, in announcing the appointment. “In addition to his public radio management experience, he brings to us impressive experience as the executive producer of the Peach State Performance Showcase, an award-winning program of live concerts from around the state of Georgia featuring international artists and renowned local ensembles and soloists. His formation of productive community partnerships with entities such as the Georgia State Council for the Arts, the Carter Presidential Center, Macon Jazz Festival, Atlanta Radio Theater Company and Golden Isles Chamber Festival should be very helpful in working with the multiple performance constituencies served by Kenan Auditorium.”

Prior to joining UNCW, Bemelmans was executive director of the Peach State Public Radio Network in Atlanta, Ga., where he was named the 1999 Station Manager of the Year by the Management Personnel in Public Broadcasting. He served as music director at WHQR from 1984 to 1989. After leaving WHQR, Bemelmans served as program director and general manager at WSVH in Savannah, Ga., from 1989 to 1992.
