UNCW CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

WILMINGTON, NC – March is Women’s History Month, and to celebrate the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will host the events listed below. All the events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

March 14

“The Truths and Myths About Eating Disorders” is an informational session for women scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, in Cameron Hall, Room 105. Sponsored by the Chi Omega sorority.

March 19

“The Mamas of Dada: Women Who Mothered an Art Movement” features a lecture by Dr. Paula K. Kamenish, associate professor in the UNCW Department of English, at 7:30 p.m., Monday, in Cameron Hall, Room 105. Using artwork, film footage, interviews and writings, Kamenish will discuss the women who helped create the avant-garde movement known as Dada. Sponsored by the English Department and the College of Arts and Sciences.

March 20

“Molly Ivins Can’t Say That, Can She?” is the keynote address for the celebration. Nationally syndicated columnist Molly Ivins will lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in Kenan Auditorium. This event is free, but tickets are required. A limited number of tickets for the general public will be available starting March 5 at the auditorium box office and the University Union Information Center. Sponsored by the UNCW Division of Student Affairs, the UNCW Leadership Lecture Series, the Women’s History Month steering committee, the Faculty Women’s Network and the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

March 21

“X (and Other Drug) Files: Myths and Mysteries of Popular Drug and Herbal Use” is an informational session providing basic information about current “club drugs,” Ritalin abuse and precautions regarding the use of herbal remedies. It is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Warwick Center, Center Stage Café. Sponsored by UNCW CROSSROADS Substance Abuse and Prevention Education Program.

March 24

Women’s Volunteer Day is set for 8 a.m. Saturday. UNCW students, faculty, staff and community members will volunteer service in organizations/agencies that focus on women’s issues. Meet at the University Union spirit rock to receive assignments. Sponsored by the UNCW Activities and Leadership Center and the Women in Leadership Mentoring Program.

March 26

“Diverse Voices: Five Notable Women” is a presentation that includes film clips and discussion of five notable women. It is scheduled for 3 p.m., Monday, in the Warwick Center, Center Stage Café.

March 27

“Rosie the Riveter: Women on the Homefront During World War II” features a lecture by Dr. Kathleen Berkeley, chair of the UNCW Department of History, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in Morton Hall, Bryan Auditorium. Berkeley will examine the image and reality of American women’s contributions to the war effort from 1940 to 1945. Sponsored by the History Department.

March 28

Vagina Monologues will be performed at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Cameron Hall Auditorium. Donations of $2 will be accepted to benefit the Domestic Violence Shelter. Sponsored by the women’s studies minor and the UNCW Panhellenic Council.
