15 CHARLOTTE-AREA HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS ATTENDING NC INSTAR WORKSHOP AT UNCW

Tuesday, July 24, 2001

This week, 15 high school teachers from the Charlotte area are attending an INSTAR (Investigating Nature through Science Teacher Active Research) workshop at UNC Wilmington focusing on marine science and computer mapping. They are involved with field work, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and laboratory work in DeLoach Hall. Coordinating the workshop are Dr. Joanne Halls, assistant professor of earth sciences who specializes in GIS and remote sensing, and Dr. Lynn A Leonard, associate professor of earth sciences, whose research interest is physical sedimentology and marine geology. UNCW has been working closely with UNC Charlotte to organize this workshop.

You may be especially interested in accompanying the teachers on field trips on Wednesday, July 25, from 8-11:30 when they go to Wrightsville Beach. To join them, come to DeLoach Hall, Room 125, at 8 a.m. If you can’t make the field trip, there is activity going on late morning and every afternoon in Dr. Halls’ lab, 125 DeLoach Hall, or the water quality lab upstairs in DeLoach.

Please contact Dr. Halls directly if you would like to cover this interesting workshop that is helping these teachers learn about our coast and become more effective teachers. You are also invited to cover the closing banquet at Madeleine Suite when the teachers will display posters reflective of the research they did during the week.
