WILMINGTON, NC – UNC Wilmington’s partnerships and initiatives with the state’s community colleges will be strengthened and enhanced as a result of new responsibilities assigned to administrator Dr. Denis Carter effective Aug. 1.UNC Wilmington Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. John C. Cavanaugh announced the restructuring of Dr. Carter’s responsibilities today. His new title will be associate vice chancellor for planning and academic outreach. He currently serves as associate provost for enrollment affairs.
“Denis has a long and very successful history of working with North Carolina’s community colleges,” said Dr. Cavanaugh, noting that Dr. Carter developed the first comprehensive transfer articulation agreements for UNCW. These subsequently became a model for the state’s comprehensive articulation agreement between the 59 community colleges and the UNC universities.
Representing the University of North Carolina system, Dr. Carter is co-chair of the Transfer Advisory Committee that is charged by the NC General Assembly to oversee the statewide comprehensive transfer articulation agreement (CAA). The CAA was authorized by legislation (HB 739, SB 1161 1995 Session of the General Assembly) that directed the establishment of a formal means to simplify and facilitate the transfer of students between the university and community college systems.
“This new assignment will provide Denis and UNCW the opportunity to explore new and exciting partnerships with community colleges and other academic institutions. Additionally, he will be engaged with strategic planning, and institutional effectiveness,” said Dr. Cavanaugh.
UNCW currently has comprehensive articulation agreements with 11 of the state’s community colleges. These agreements cover college transfers for Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees. UNCW also has four special bilateral articulation agreements for Associate of Applied Science programs in early childhood education, marine technology and chemical technology with Cape Fear Community College and aquaculture with Brunswick Community College. Although Dr. Carter’s initial focus will be on community colleges in the region, long-term strategy will be to extend these partnerships statewide.
Further, Dr. Carter will serve as the Division of Academic Affairs’ liaison to institutional research and planning. He will be participating in enrollment and strategic marketing analyses relative to academic programs and initiatives of the university
Denis George Carter joined the UNCW family in 1978 as a faculty member in economics. He has held several posts at UNCW prior to this appointment, including associate dean of the Cameron School of Business and assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs. He is well known for his work with community development organizations at both the state and local levels.
