Thursday, August 09, 2001

WILMINGTON, NC -- International student coordinator Heather Smith received the 2001 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence presented today at the university’s 26th annual Service Awards Program in Wagoner Hall.

In a letter of nomination, Smith was called “the most dedicated public servant” that the nominator had known in more than 30 years of employment at institutions throughout the United States. “She makes Wilmington a special, perhaps unique place for our students - international and domestic.”

Smith was one of 16 nominees for the Staff Award of Excellence. The honor, presented annually, recognizes an employee whose service to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism. The other nominees were Dan Aspenleiter, research vessel captain for the Center for Marine Science; Michael Bianco, facility engineering specialist in the Architecture and Construction Office; Lee Brinkley, administrative secretary for the Watson School of Education; Samuel Chance, computer consultant in the Information Technology Systems Division; James Ford, grounds supervisor for the Landscape Services Department; Kay Fryar, director of human resources administration; Alnita Hannible, admissions assistant for the Graduate School and Research; Nicole Hinson, nutritionist for wellness services; Kimberly Holbrook, administrative secretary in the Department of Social Work; Pat Howey, associate director of athletics; Lori Leitch, office assistant in the Department of Biological Sciences; Sharon Lindgren, administrative assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences; Helen Rice, processing assistant in the Office of Housing and Residence Life; Michael Sheehan, systems programmer in the Department of Computing Services; and Glenn Taylor, field operations manager for the Center for Marine Science.

As this year’s recipient, Smith received a $1,500 award presented on behalf of the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a presentation clock and a framed certificate. In addition, her name will be engraved on a plaque which is on display in the university’s administrative building, Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is nominated for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.
