UNCW ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS 12 SCHOLARSHIPS

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW Alumni Association has awarded 12 scholarships for the 2001-02 academic year. Eight scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students, two to graduate students and two to athletes, all who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and their communities and who have a financial need. Each is valued at approximately $1,500 a year and is renewable annually if criteria are met on a continuing basis. Scholarships are funded by donations from UNCW alumni and friends, as well as income from the UNCW Seahawk collegiate license plate program.GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS:
Milli Raynor of Hampstead was awarded the Lewis-Wiley Alumni Fellowship. Milli is working on Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. Her career objective is to become a high school principal. She is the daughter of Sallie M. Raynor of Edinburg, Va.
Jenifer J. Murphy of Wilmington was awarded the P. Daniel Lockamy Jr. Graduate Alumni Scholarship. She is working on a master’s degree in curriculum and instructional supervision. Her career objective is to become an instructor at the University of North Carolina. She is the daughter of Marilyn Moberg of Glenview, Ill.
NEW UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS:
Sandra L. Tatum of Hampstead is an incoming freshman. She intends to major in international finance and pursue a career in international business. She is the daughter of Eileen M. and C. Russell Tatum Jr. of Hampstead. She is a graduate of Topsail High School where she was senior class vice president and a member of the National Honors Society, and volleyball and soccer teams. She was named to Who’s Who Among American High Schools and All American Scholar, was “best all around” in French and had the highest average in chemistry.
Matthew M. Kunic of Youngstown, Ohio, is a junior majoring in communication studies and political science. His career objective is to become a television news anchor or reporter. Matthew is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, College Democrats, Campus Crusade, Intervarsity, Club Soccer and N.C. Student Legislature. He was named to the Dean’s and Chancellor’s lists. He is the son of Dolores Kunic of Youngstown and John Kunic of Gibsonia, Pa.
SCHOLARSHIP RENEWALS:
Sharon I. Duff of Holly Ridge is the recipient of the Hugh Henry Fox Alumni Scholarship, awarded in memory of Wilmington College’s first graduate. She is a sophomore majoring in elementary education, and her career objective is to become an elementary school teacher. In addition to receiving the alumni scholarship, Sharon is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and winner of the Lippitt Outstanding Student Leadership Award. She was named to the Chancellor’s and Dean’s lists both semesters of her freshman year. Sharon is the daughter of Lynne and Carl Duff of Holly Ridge.
Jackie L. Roberts of Shawboro, N.C., is the recipient of the Gerald H. Shinn Alumni Scholarship which includes a $500 book award. In addition, she received the merit-based Stephen and Kathleen Kelbley Scholarship which covers in-state tuition, fees and books. The vice president of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Jackie is a junior majoring in accounting. Her career objective is to become a certified public accountant. She is the daughter of Elaine and Harvey Roberts of Shawboro.
Brandy L. Garrell of Chadbourn is a junior majoring in accounting and participates in the UNCW Honors Program. She is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and was named to the Chancellor’s List for two semesters. She is the daughter of Sandy Coleman of Chadbourn and Ricky Garrell of Nichols, S.C.
Cynthia F. Thomas of Charlotte is a sophomore business major. In addition to the alumni scholarship, she also received the $3,500 Hughes Brothers Scholarship. Cynthia is the daughter of Frieda R. and Ronald Thomas of Charlotte.
Martin Camacho of New York, N.Y., is a senior majoring in nursing and is a UNCW School of Nursing honors scholar. He is a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society, the Association for Nursing Students, English Club and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was president of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society (2000-01) and is the Student Government Association School of Nursing representative. This year he was named USAA All-American Scholar and received the USAA National Collegiate Nursing Award and UNCW Leadership Excellence Award for significant contributions to improving the quality of life for students. Upon graduation he plans to further his education as an acute care nurse practitioner. He is the son of Teresa Roldan of New York.
Andrea L. Cartrette of Castle Hayne is a sophomore majoring in English. Her career objective is to work in the advertising/communications industry. She is the daughter of B. Glenn and Teri Cartrette of Castle Hayne.
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS:
Kelly Bailey of Greensboro is the recipient of one of the two scholarships for athletes. A junior business major, she is a member of the women’s golf team. She is the daughter of Mrs. T.J. Bailey of Greensboro.
Leslie C. Smith of Cary was awarded one of the two scholarships for athletes. A CAA scholar-athlete in swimming, Leslie was awarded a varsity letter and the Seahawk award for two consecutive years. She is also parliamentarian for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. A junior majoring in communication studies, Leslie is the daughter of Kim L. and Stephen W. Smith of Cary.
