UNCW SCHOOL OF NURSING PROMOTES TWO PROFESSORS

Thursday, August 09, 2001

Drs. Perri J. Bomar and Bettie J. Glenn, professors in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, received promotions announced today by Dr. Virginia Adams, dean of the nursing school.

Bomar, who was named associate dean of research and community affairs, will direct the school’s research efforts and implement community partnerships aimed at health promotion. Through Bomar’s efforts, the School of Nursing has received several awards from various agencies including the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture. One federal award the school received, a $150,000 economic development grant, will cover operating costs for the Fifth District Rural Health Clinic built by the town of Navassa. The nursing school will provide limited services and health assessment to families in the community. Bomar, a noted researcher in family health, earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Akron. Her master’s degree was earned from Case Western Reserve University. Bomar joined UNCW in 1996.

Named associate dean of academic affairs, Glenn will develop and implement the school’s undergraduate and graduate education programs which include maintaining national accreditation standards and state approval. A graduate of the BSN Program at Winston-Salem State University, Glenn earned a master’s degree from the University of California at San Francisco and a doctorate in education from the University of South Carolina. Glenn, who served as curriculum consultant to Iwate Prefectural University in Japan, implemented a new total testing program for pre-licensure students to promote nursing students’ success with the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX), a state-mandated test that is required before graduates can practice professionally. To date, 95 percent of the school’s spring 2001 graduates passed NCLEX. Glenn joined UNCW in January 2000.
