UNIVERSITY THEATRE TO PERFORM ROMULUS LINNEY’S GINT
Friday, September 21, 2001
WILMINGTON, NC – The UNCW University Theatre production of Gint will premiere at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Kenan Hall’s SRO Theatre. Additional performances of this play, which kicks off the theatre’s 2001-02 season, will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 6. A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7.This two-act play, written by American Romulus Linney, is an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic Peer Gynt. In Linney’s work, Gynt becomes Pete Gint, a ragged Appalachian youth, and the play spans 80 years as it tells the misadventures of a good-for-nothing dreamer who wants to be grand and glorious.
Nine UNCW undergraduate students, under the direction of Ed Wagenseller, constitute the cast. Senior Greg Reposa will perform the title role of Pete Gint. Jessica Fulbright, a junior theatre major, will portray his aged mother “Oldie Momma.” Other cast members handle roles such as Gint’s mountain neighbors, razorback hogs or asylum inmates.
Tickets are $5 for the public; free for UNCW students with valid ID. Call the Kenan Auditorium box office at 910/962-3500 for reservations. Due to scenes that contain mature subject matter, this play is not intended for all ages.
For more information, contact Dr. Deanna Toten Beard, visiting assistant professor in the UNCW Department of Art and Theatre, at 910/962-3403.
