DATE RAPE EXPERT TO LECTURE DURING UNCW’S WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN

WILMINGTON, NC – Date rape expert Ron Campbell will present “Understanding Sexual Assault: A Male Perspective” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in UNC Wilmington’s Kenan Auditorium. This free, public event is part of the university’s White Ribbon Campaign, a national social awareness effort to involve men in an effort to stop violence against women.The White Ribbon Campaign, sponsored by UNCW’s fraternities, the Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Athletics, will be observed Saturday, Oct. 20, through Tuesday, Oct. 23. Fraternity members organized the inaugural White Ribbon Golf Tournament scheduled for Oct. 20 at Castle Bay Golf Club. Tournament proceeds will benefit the Domestic Violence Shelter Inc. The tournament, which is a captain’s choice format for four-person teams, will observe a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Entry is $50 per person which includes cart, green fees and dinner. Campbell, president and CEO of College Business Concepts, is a human sexuality educator with more than 20 years of experience in the field. He specializes in issues related to masculinity development, acquaintance rape, sexual assault and harassment. Campbell received a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Heidelberg College and a master’s degree in counseling, human services and guidance from Montclair State College.
Earlier in the week, Dr. Alan David Berkowitz will present programs for UNCW male athletes and fraternity members. “A Man’s Responsibility to Prevent Sexual Assault,” intended for athletes, will be presented at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, in Cameron Auditorium, and “Is What I Want What You Want?” for fraternity men will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, in the Warwick Center Ballroom.
Berkowitz, who earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell University, developed model rape prevention programs for men at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A Fellow of the American College Health Association, Berkowitz has more than 20 years of experience in higher education as a trainer, psychologist, faculty member and counseling center director. He received the Miguel Garcia-Tunon Award for Human Dignity from the American College Health Association.
In addition, campaign sponsors will distribute white ribbons to all male university administrators, faculty, staff and students on Monday, Oct. 22, to wear during the week. The ribbon is a statement that the wearer agrees not to commit, to condone or to remain silent about violence against women.
