Wilmington—Frances Weller, co-anchor for the 5, 6, and 11 o’clock news at WECT-TV6, will join four of Wilmington's most distinguished journalists and media executives in a panel at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to discuss the moral and practical issues of news coverage after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack and the subsequent U.S. military retaliation. The discussion will take place at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5 in the Warwick Center Ballroom preceded by a reception at 6:30 and a special presentation at 7 to honor those who participated in the recent "Voices of Wilmington" radio series."Voices of Wilmington," produced by the Pastoral Summit at UNCW, is a radio series which brought together some 20 Wilmington residents -- from all walks of life -- to talk about the impact of Sept. 11 on both their private and public lives. The series aired on WHQR 91.3 FM (National Public Radio Affiliate).
Those honored at this Monday's reception will be presented a "Collector's Edition" CD box set which includes each commentary and also a montage of the entire series. The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, New Hanover County Regional Library, Cape Fear Museum, and UNCW's Randall Library will also receive the CD box set as a "time capsule" gift for their archives.
The public is invited to attend the reception, presentation, and panel discussion titled "The Media: Moral and Practical Issues--September 11th and After." Joining Miss Weller on the panel will be Rhonda Bellamy, news director of WGNI and WMNX (Coast 97.1) and talk show host at WAAV radio; Jon Evans, news anchor and managing editor at WAAY-TV, channel 3; Susan Dankel, general manager of WHQR, Wilmington's National Public Radio affiliate; and Allen Parsons, associate publisher and executive editor of the Wilmington Star-News.
