Wednesday, January 23, 2002
By Kristin Summerford, PR InternWilmington- English professor Elizabeth “Betsy” Ervin will serve as the first director of the UNCW Women’s Resource Center effective July 1. The center’s creation is the result of a campus survey and a proposal by the university’s Women’s Issues Task Force.
According to Ervin, the center will provide many services for women including job and childcare referrals and information sessions on women’s issues. She added that it would serve as a safe haven for women.
“The center will give students a more global picture of what women’s lives are like,” said Ervin. “Programs will be incorporated with the women’s studies minor to help motivate female students to live the life they want to live.”
Dr. Ervin teaches classes in English and women’s studies. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree from Texas Christian University. Ervin earned a Ph.D. in rhetoric composition and the teaching of English from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
In appointing Ervin as women’s resource center director, Dr. John C. Cavanaugh, provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs at UNC Wilmington said, “Dr. Ervin will bring a clear and important vision to the center. One that is informed by her academic background, scholarship, active personal involvement in issues related to women, and broad knowledge of the campus and community.”
