UNCW TO SCREEN FILM EXCERPTS FROM ANNA DEAVERE SMITH’S TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES

WILMINGTON, NC – Excerpts from Twilight: Los Angeles, a film dealing with the L.A. police beating of Rodney King, will be shown at 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, in UNC Wilmington’s Warwick Center, Room 138. A discussion on race relations follows. The university’s Campus Activities and Involvement Center is sponsoring this free public event.

Adapted from Anna Deavere Smith’s award-winning play, this film screening and discussion are precursors to Smith’s lecture “Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change” scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Kenan Auditorium. Tickets for “Snapshots” are free for UNCW students, faculty and staff and $7.50 for all others. Contact the Kenan Auditorium box office at 910/962-3500.

Twilight: Los Angeles, which premiered in 2001, deals with the 1991 beating of King captured on video as well as the 1992 acquittal of the Los Angeles police officers which set off three days of rioting, looting and violence in which 52 people died.

An acclaimed playwright and actress, Smith has appeared in the films Dave, Philadelphia and The American President. She has a reoccurring guest role on the TV series The West Wing.
