UNCW WELCOMES ALUMNI BACK FOR HOMECOMING ON JANUARY 19

Homecoming 2002 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 19.

The UNCW Alumni Association invites all who attended or graduated from Wilmington College and UNCW to participate in one or all activities scheduled. Special recognition will be given to all 1980s graduates as well as alumni who were members of Delta Sigma Theta, Delta Zeta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Alumni can work out at the Student Recreation Center between 6:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18; between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19; between 1 and 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20; and between 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21. Registration with the Alumni Relations Office is required for admittance.

The Young Alumni Council invites UNCW graduates from 1991 to 2001 to a social at Front Street Brewery (third floor) in downtown Wilmington at 9 p.m. A DJ will entertain, food will be provided free of charge, and there will be a cash bar.

The following activities are planned for Saturday, Jan. 19:

The bookstore, located in the Burney Student Support Center, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alumni can show their membership card to obtain a 10 percent discount on non-sale items throughout the bookstore.



The annual homecoming 5K run starts at 9 a.m. at Student Recreation Center. Early bird registration is $14; on race day the fee is $16. The first 250 who register receive commemorative T-shirts. To register call 910.962.7443.



A drop-in lunch will be held at Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no charge, but reservations are required and can be made by calling the alumni relations office.



AAGA, the African American Graduates Association, will have its annual luncheon meeting at noon in the Center Stage Café. Ralph Parker, the former director of minority affairs, and past AAGA leaders will be recognized. Linda Melvin Rawley ’86 will give the homecoming message. Lunch is $5 for reservations made by Monday, Jan. 14, and $10 at the door.



A walking tour of campus, led by student ambassadors, will begin at 2 p.m. in the Trask Coliseum lobby. The highlight will be the newest addition to campus, Lakeside Hall.



UNCW basketball alumni will have a reunion basketball game at 3 p.m. in Trask Coliseum. There is no charge for admission.



The Chicken Pickin’ Pregame Social will be held at 5 p.m. in the Hawk’s Nest. The “traveling” alumni chapters – Triad, Triangle, Charlotte, Charleston and Washington, D.C. – will be recognized. General admission is $10 for alumni and guests. Reservations are recommended.



At 7 p.m. the UNCW Seahawks host James Madison University in Trask Coliseum. A limited number of game tickets will be available at $10 a person for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. They can be obtained by calling 910.962.3233.



Delta Sigma Theta, Delta Zeta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon alumni will be recognized during half-time activities, which include the crowning of the 2002 homecoming queen and king, by alumni board chair Bill Herrett. The Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter will host a social in Trask Coliseum, Room 142.



The celebration reaches its climax at 9:30 p.m. at the annual homecoming dance in the grand ballroom of the Wilmington Hilton Riverside. This year’s event will feature entertainment by the Voltage Brothers. Tickets are $20 a person and must be purchased by Wednesday, Jan. 16. Admission includes heavy hors d'oeuvres. A cash bar will be available.
