The Naked Truth: Body Image Exposed UNCW Observes Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2002

Wilmington, NC - Eating disorders are widely prevalent on college campuses with 17-33 percent of female students nationwide reporting eating disorder symptoms. Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is a nationally recognized week devoted to the promotion of healthy body image and preventing and raising awareness about eating disorders. In 2002, the theme is celebrating our natural body sizes and shapes. UNCW’s Wellness Services, Counseling Center, and SHEBA (Students for Healthy Eating and Body Acceptance) are proud to sponsor UNCW’s version of Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2002, “The Naked Truth: Body Image Exposed.” Featured events will include:February 18-22
"The Century Project" Photography Display, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., Randall Library
A chronological series of nude portraits of females from birth through 100 years with personal statements written by the subjects.
Monday, February 25
"Food Diary: A Play About Our Relationship with Food," 7 p.m., Warwick Center Ballroom
Written and produced by the female acting company, Broadville, the play looks at women’s relationship with food and the development and recovery of eating disorders.
Tuesday, February 26
"A Natural Woman: A Fashion Show Featuring True Beauty," 7 p.m., Warwick Center Ballroom
UNCW women will model the latest fashions and provide living proof that beauty and confidence come in all sizes. Also see how the media transform pictures of women using computer technology to offer false suggestions of the ideal body.
Wednesday, February 27
"Voices of Recovery: A Panel of UNCW Students," 7 p.m., Warwick -- Center Stage
UNCW students tell their story of overcoming eating disorders.
Thursday, February 28
"Love Your Body: Body Image Fair," 6:30 p.m., Warwick Center Ballroom
Experience for yourself various activities that explore your own body image and learn ways to improve it and to love the skin you’re in!
Friday, March 1
"Fearless Friday: A Guilt-Free, Diet-Free Day"
